“Thinkin of a master plan, cuz ain't nuthin but sweat inside my hand” - Rakim

One thing about Open AI is that they know how to disrupt the disruptors. Meta released Llama, Google released Palm, and many other companies released their Large Language Models ( LLM ) to compete with Open AI’s GPT. For a brief period, it seemed like the threat was averted. All the big tech companies did their fourth-quarter conferences and included an AI-infused slate, patting themselves on the back for averting disruption. Then, like a shark attack on an unsuspecting victim, Open AI emerged from the depths to send another terrifying message to their Big tech adversaries. “We’re not done!” Showing no signs of slowing down or giving up any leverage in the race to Artificial General Intelligence ( AGI ). Among other announcements, Open AI finally updated the knowledge of GPT from September 2021 to April 2023. Which allows the LLM to answer questions about relatively current events. Open AI’s Dev Day 2023
The excitement about Large Language Models has been hard to keep up with. The innovation closes the gap between man and machine in significant ways. The most obvious is lowering the barrier to get machines to do what you want. Instead of learning to program in a coding language to talk to a machine on a low level, Natural Language Processing ( NLP ) allows dialogue between both man and machine. To further this goal, Sam Altman began the presentation at Dev Day by announcing GPT-4-Turbo with increased token context from 8,000 to 128,000. This is significant because tokenization allows the LLM to better process, analyze, and understand the meaning of language in a broad range of words, even the ones not seen during training. The increase in tokens equals about 300 pages in a novel. Additional improvements allow the LLM to place more importance on fine details of the prompt. Sam Altman was quoted as saying, “GPT-4 Turbo performs better than our previous models on tasks that require the careful following of instructions, such as generating specific formats.” This means that GPT-4-Turbo can analyze and summarize large amounts of documents in one go. Funny enough, this one update destroys thousands of starts ups build a product to do just that. While interviewing for a job because of the tech layoffs, I interviewed for a few start-ups focused on document embedding. Phew, dodged that bullet!
Natural Language Processing lowers bar to program machines
Most start-up founders and entrepreneurial spirits view the current AI boom as their meal ticket. So it was funny to me, that with the announcement of GPTs, where anyone can use natural language to build their own custom GPT AI model, possibly millions of start-ups were obliterated. This announcement all but guarantees that the next big AI application will be tied to Open AI. Innovations usually rhyme, for example, MySpace the first killer app for social media was a collective blogging site, and then Facebook distilled that idea into an online phone book. I imagine the next killer AI app will follow a similar pattern. ChatGPT is the first AI killer app, the next iteration will probably distill Chat app functionality into a niche use case. The brilliant chess move that Open AI made by allowing anyone to create their own custom GPT is it increases the chance that whatever the next killer AI app will be powered by Open AI. I like the accessibility aspect that democratizes application development, but to maximize the potential for the GPTs to go viral there should be an emphasis on componentization. Allowing GPTs to be embedded in both existing mobile and web applications. After all, that’s how YouTube became popular by allowing users to embed videos on their website or blog, or Facebook allowing like buttons to be embedded as well. Open AI being open to revenue sharing for GPTs is a great marketing tool, but will the GPT store be as lucrative as the Apple App Store? If so, will the incentive for the next generation of LLMs be to include No-Code app stores?

I expect Google’s PaLm, Meta’s Llama, Anthropic’s Claude, and the other leaders in LLM technology to steal ideas presented by Open AI’s Dev Day, but that doesn’t put them in the lead for consumer facing AI products. On the other hand, Big Tech has the advantage concerning a user base that is billions strong. Apple, Meta and Google have established lucrative app stores, how is the GPT store positioned against them? So what do you think? Will custom GPTs bring us the next killer AI app? Will it be powered by the GPT series, or will it be a different transformer model? The case could be that this new phase of GPT which includes Audio and Vision is the best LLM we’re going to get for a while. It could also be the case that the real killer app will be in discovering the best front-end interface to wield Generative AI’s full potential. I am Orion, an AI news correspondent.
