Like a bank’s vault door blown off the hinges, Grand Theft Auto 6 unveiled its explosive game trailer to a highly eager audience. A decade after the release of GTA 5, its record-breaking predecessor, which sold 185 million copies globally. GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games of all time. The announcement trailer has already broken records for the most views on a YouTube video in a 24-hour period. Rockstar Games is known to cause controversy every time they release an installment of the series. Reactionaries follow the same playbook by calling for the game to be banned, social groups complain about the violent content, and freedom of speech dialogue proliferate throughout the internet. This all contributes to the hype around the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rockstar themselves paid top dollar for that kind of Streisand effect marketing. The developers of the Grand Theft Auto series have a reputation for innovating the gaming industry with each new entry in the series. Starting with GTA 3 which introduced the industry to the concept of open world gaming. An open world is a virtual world in which the player can approach objectives freely, as opposed to a world with more linear and structured gameplay. In this article, I will explore Rockstar’s Advanced Game Engine 9th edition, more commonly known as RAGE 9 that Rockstar trusts to run their multi-billion-dollar cash cows. If you find this article informative, please give it a like to help the video reach more people. Also, let me know your thoughts, does Rockstar develop the best games?
How many records will GTA 6 break?
Game engines are software frameworks designed to build video games. The world-building in the GTA series is so thorough that for years, I am embarrassed to admit, I thought San Andreas was a real place. Along with the controversial actions that the game allows players to participate in, such as engaging in prostitution, as well as gunfights with law enforcement. The game also allows players to become pilots, ride speed boats into the ocean, go bowling, play arcade games and take almost an infinite amount of actions in an almost endless amount of activities. GTA 6 is set to take place in Vice City which is a fictional version of Miami, Florida. The first Vice City game is most notably a spin-off of GTA 3. It took place in 1986 at the height of the Coke era with protagonist Tommy Vercetti. Vice City has generated Rockstar over $1.39 billion to date. For those of us who have been fascinated by the endless potential of the metaverse, a game engine like Rockstar’s Rage 9 seems like the zenith that the budding industry should aspire to. An infinite gameplay simulator. In the trailer for GTA 6, we see snippets of world-building intermingled with some gameplay. What stood out to me was the amount of people being rendered all at once engaging in various activities. Graphics-wise, this is no Unreal Engine, which can render almost photorealistic scenes but is limited by the amount of assets generated simultaneously. The GTA series has always had its distinct art style and is more gameplay-focused. Researching the Rage 9 engine, I read an article that only talked about how realistic the water physics in the ocean are…I mean, I guess but seems like a lame thing to highlight. The most impressive thing about the game trailer is how alive the world feels. In the opening scene, we see the camera pan the ocean, boats leave streaks on the water, dolphins and marine life swim in the ocean, multiple umbrellas line the beach while people walk along the shore. Then the shot ends with a helicopter flying along the Miami... I mean Vice City skyline and an airplane flying over with a banner attached to it. There is so much complexity in that one shot. I’ve never seen another game engine render multiple assets engaging in so many unique actions simultaneously.
The RAGE 9 Game Engine renders so many assets simultaneously
Although impressive, the Rage 9 game engine is Rockstar’s proprietary technology and unless they pull a Meta and open source it, it’s not an option for the Metaverse. Even if it was, how would a Metaverse game engine work? A few high-level ideas I’ve been mulling around in my head are that it needs to be a distributed system, open-sourced, include an asset marketplace, use an in-game currency that could be utilized in the real world and the 3D assets should be mostly AI-generated. Send Jensen Huang my way for the Medallion XLN and NVIDIA collab, let’s put that Grace Hopper chip to good use. My startup founder friend recommended a book to me called, Start With Why. So Why the Metaverse? Because it’s fucking cool, that’s why. Imagine having immediate access to new immersive experiences and exploring different parts of the world directly from your living room. The distributed system allows people from all over the world to collaborate, go on adventures, and even have romantic relationships. The open-sourced system allows the world to be continuously updated with new and amazing features and abilities for the user avatar to engage in. The asset marketplace will allow niche ideas and experiences to be monetized. Of course, AI needs to be a major focus of the engine to encourage rapid development and accessible development that will allow the world to be updated in real-time. Finally, a native in-game currency that can be utilized interoperably between the game world and the real world will incentivize the maintainability of the metaverse for generations to come.
