Smart Glasses will replace the iPhone
Star Citizen lays the stage for metaverse spatial computing

I can’t lie, I’ve been amused watching big tech scramble to fight off disruption from Open AI. After all, if there is anyone who knows how quickly a disruptive technology trend can break a business model…it’s them. When Facebook changed its name to Meta, many talking heads were complaining that Mark Zuckerberg lost his marbles by shifting the focus of the company from a social media juggernaut to the metaverse. In my humble opinion, the writing was on the wall, Facebook’s Social Media business had peaked. They could Either become a sleeping giant waiting to be disrupted by the next shiny object, or they could reinvent themselves to be masters of a new industry. Especially since at the time of the name change in 2021, Apple was imposing new privacy rules on the iPhone that made it harder for Facebook to profit from tracking users for ads. Not to mention, the increased regulation from bureaucrats around social media coming from places like Australia and the European Union. The metaverse pivot could have been a chance to focus on new exciting technology. Well, has the gambit paid off? Is Meta the dominant force in the ever-elusive metaverse? Or will they go bankrupt attempting to bring the metaverse mainstream? All these questions and more will be answered in this episode of Medallion XLN. If you find this article informative, please give it a like and subscribe. Also, let me know your thoughts, Is Meta the king of the metaverse?
Meta Connect 2023
Meta recently held its annual Connect conference, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg recapped the amazing work his company has been doing in the realm of artificial intelligence and metaverse infrastructure. These achievements are very exciting. The SparkNotes version is the Meta Quest 3 VR headset, released at half the size of the Quest 2. It features innovations in mixed reality pass-through. Of course, their Llama 2 LLM was integrated into many of their flagship social media apps. Various celebrities were used to represent avatars in chat apps, such as Mr. Beast the social media guru, Snoop Dogg the dungeon master, Paris Hilton as something or another and I forget the rest. I’m skimming by this stuff because it was the least interesting part for me at the conference. My highlight was the Smart Glasses collab that Meta is doing with RayBan. To me, this is significant because it represents a transition from handheld smart devices to wearable spacial computing devices. The smart glasses allow wearers to capture images and video directly from their face, Livestream directly to Instagram and Facebook, listen to music, make phone calls, and ask Meta AI questions powered by Llama 2. I think that Meta is moving extremely fast, but I hope they realize that these glasses should be prioritized the same way that Apple does the iPhone. The Smart glasses has the potential to be a serious threat to the iPhone and should be marketed aggressively. These glasses are the gateway drug to the metaverse. On future iterations of the Smart glasses, Meta should include an App Store and solicit ideas from developers. Apple has the blueprint, just steal it!
Citizen Con 2023
Stepping outside Meta Connect and into Citizen Con, where they are innovating first-person shooters like it’s 1993. Non-Gamers might not be familiar with the interesting set of circumstances surrounding the video game, Star Citizen, not to be confused with Bethesda’s Starfield (2023). Star Citizen is a game that has been in development since 2010 and led a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise over $600 million as of August 2023. Star Citizen is a space simulator, first-person shooter, and Massively Multiplayer Online ( MMO). They have a Wiki that provides additional information, but I want to focus on their innovations in multiplayer games. The Star Engine has a goal of allowing players to build ships, travel through space, land on other planets, explore alien life then warp speed to different galaxies in real-time with no loading screens or invisible walls. The innovative part of the Star game engine is that it allows an entire universe to run in real-time as a multiplayer game with this technology called Server Meshing and Persistent Streaming. Server Meshing allows star systems to move in and out of memory without the need for loading screens. Persistent streaming allows any impact done to the game world by the player to continue existing in the universe after the player leaves the game. I couldn’t help but think, could this be the engine of the metaverse? An infinite amount of planets and galaxies can be customized by users to implement unique experiences. From fantasy to sci-fi worlds, all operating simultaneously in a real-time MMO. Along with ship-building functionality, an additional civilization-building interfaces could be the missing link to take this engine to the next level.

So what do you think? Could Meta’s Smart Glasses have what it takes to compete with the iPhone? Are you as excited about spatial computing as I am? In the same way, that the iPhone condensed a camera, telephone, and PC into a handheld device, the Smart Glass does the same for wearable devices. Have you heard about the interesting things that Star Citizen has been doing? Could game engines similar to the Star Engine be the next big thing in Cloud computing?
